Why glass packaging is a green packaging method Aug 25,2022

1.The raw material source of glass is green.

Silicate compounds are the main structure of glass, silicon is one of the most abundant elements in the earth's crust, and silicon exists in the form of minerals in nature. The raw materials used in glass are mainly quartz sand, borax, soda ash, limestone, etc. According to different glass performance requirements, a small amount of other auxiliary raw materials can be added to adjust the glass performance. These raw materials are harmless to the environment when protective measures are taken during use. Moreover, with the development of glass technology, the selection of raw materials has become a non-toxic raw material that is harmless to the human body and the environment, and there are mature safety protection measures in the use process to ensure the green and healthy nature of glass raw materials.

2.Green glass production process

There are four main steps in the glass production process: batching, melting, forming and annealing, and processing. The entire production process has basically achieved intelligent production and control. The operator can set and adjust the process parameters only in the control room, and implement centralized monitoring of the entire production process, which greatly reduces the work intensity and improves the working environment of the workers.

In the production process of glass, a number of quality and emission monitoring points have been established to monitor the gas emission in the production process and strictly ensure that the production of glass meets the national environmental protection standards. At present, in the production process of glass, the main sources of heat in the glass melting process are the clean energy advocated by countries such as natural gas fuel and electricity. With the development and progress of glass production technology, the application of oxy-fuel combustion technology and electric melting technology in glass production has greatly improved thermal efficiency, reduced energy consumption and saved energy. Since the combustion process uses oxygen with a purity of about 95%, the content of nitrogen oxides in the combustion products is reduced, and the heat of the high-temperature flue gas generated by the combustion is also recovered for heating and power generation. At the same time, in order to better reduce pollutant emissions, the glass factory has carried out desulfurization, denitrification and dust removal treatment on the flue gas to minimize emissions.

3.Glass has the advantage of recyclability

Glass materials have an advantage is that they can be smelted and used indefinitely, which means that as long as the recycling of broken glass is done well, the resource utilization of glass materials can be infinitely close to 100%. According to statistics, about 33% of domestic glass is recycled and reused, which means that the glass industry removes 2.2 million tons of carbon dioxide from the environment every year, which is equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions of nearly 400,000 cars. While the recovery of broken glass in developed countries such as Germany, Switzerland and France has reached 80%, or even 90%, there is still a lot of room for broken glass recovery in China. As long as a perfect cullet recovery mechanism is established, it can not only reduce carbon emissions, but also greatly save energy and raw materials.

4.Glass is environmentally friendly and pollution-free

Glass is a molten, cooled, solidified amorphous silicate inorganic substance. Its composition is similar to that of the natural environment, so it will not produce toxic chemicals in the natural environment and will not pollute water resources, soil and air, glass is an environmentally friendly material. In the whole life cycle of glass products, green and environmentally friendly raw materials are used in the selection and control of raw materials. In the glass production stage, clean energy is used as energy supply, supplemented by corresponding environmental protection treatment equipment and waste heat recovery or power generation devices. In terms of process control, the automation and intelligent control of the production process are realized. In the recycling and processing stage, glass products can be fully recycled, and the processing cost is low, and they can be repeatedly returned to the furnace for melting to generate new products for reuse. Compared with other packaging materials, glass materials have no VOC emissions and no heavy metal precipitation.
