The method of packaging wine in a container such as a glass bottle facilitates both storage and transportation. In order to allow the wine to be placed horizontally, which is conducive to the aging of the wine, the bottle gradually evolved from the round belly shape at the beginning to today's slender bottle shape.

Three kinds of common wine bottles in the world

3 kinds of wine bottles that are common in the world and occupy a large proportion. At present,high-quality wines are usually packaged in traditional heavy bottles, and special bottle shapes are often the result of commercial needs. The three most classic wine bottles are Bordeaux, Burgundy and Hock.

The functional parts of wine bottles can be divided into five parts: bottle mouth, bottle neck, bottle shoulder, bottle body and bottle bottom. The bottle type can be divided into convex, square and threaded bottle according to the bottle mouth. According to the bottle shoulder, it can be divided into Bordeaux, Burgundy and Hock bottles.9 different types of bottle shapes can be obtained by combining different types of bottle mouths and bottle shoulders.

Definition and Difference of wine bottles

Bordeaux bottle: Also known as the Lyert bottle, its bottle wall is straight and the shoulder is sharp. In order to remove sediment when pouring wine, the shoulders are high and the two sides are symmetrical, which is suitable for wines that need to be stored for a long time. Bottles in this shape are used for Bordeaux-type wines.

Burgundy: This wine bottle has a respectively narrow shoulder and a rounder shape.  Burgundy red wines have less sedimentation and therefore have flatter shoulders than Bordeaux bottles and are easier to produce.  In France, this bottle shape is also used in the Rhone Valley region.

Hock bottle: Hock is the ancient name for German wine. It is used for white wines from the Rhine Valley in Germany and the adjacent French Alsace region. Because it does not need to be stored for a long time, and there is no sediment in the wine, the bottle is slender. A variation of it is the green Mosel bottle. The traditional rule in Germany is for Rhine wines in brown bottles and Moselles in green bottles. But not so absolutely. But you can still use it as a reliable basis. Most of the wines produced in Alsace have bottles similar in shape to Hock bottles. Hock bottles are found all over the world, but be warned: this bottle does not necessarily reflect the type and quality of the wine inside.

Bottle Color

Wine bottles are usually dark green or brown to protect the wine from sunlight, and brown bottles are more protective than green ones. However the color of the bottle glass is just another criterion for judging the style of the wine.
